Prometheus off to Strong Start Overseas, Opens in U.S. June 8th

American sci-fi fans will have to wait until June 8th to catch “Prometheus” in a state-side theater.  The Ridley Scott-directed thriller is already making waves though in European markets.

The R-rated, 3D feature opened Wednesday in France to a one-day sum of $1.5 million.  This haul marks the second-highest French opening day of 2012, behind only “The Avengers” which tallied in at $2.9 million.

“Prometheus” ranked higher than the Parisian openings of “Men in Black 3″, “Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows” as well as “The Hunger Games”

“Prometheus” as a project (and it’s been a project for a while) was initially meant to be a prequel to the four films that presently make up the “Alien” franchise.  Scott later chose to create a story which has elements of the “Alien” universe, but which would have its own mythology and concepts.

The plot features the crew of the spaceship Prometheus, who follow a star map discovered among the remnants of several ancient Earth civilizations.  The crew journey’s to a distant world hoping to discover the origins of humanity, but instead awaken a force that could cause the extinction of the human race.  The film stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba and Logan Marshall-Green.
